 Economic Recovery and International Trade Speaker Series, UK Edition image Jo Freeman is the British Consul General for Queensland and the Northern Territory and the Director of Trade for Australia & New Zealand at the UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT). Before arriving in Brisbane Jo worked as the Deputy Consul General in Sydney and has previously worked for DIT in various roles overseas including India and Canada. As the Head of Learning & Development at UK Trade and Investment, she delivered training courses across the overseas network and in the UK. Before coming to Australia in October 2016, Jo was DIT’s Deputy Regional Director for London. In this role she was responsible for managing stakeholder relationships across the London region and helping London companies explore export opportunities overseas.

Dr Sarah Pearson, FTSE, Non-Executive Director, Advisory Board Member, Researcher & Investor

 Economic Recovery and International Trade Speaker Series, UK Edition image Dr Sarah Pearson FTSE, has extensive global executive leadership experience spanning FTSE 100 multinationals, international C-suite roles in the public and private sector, leading brands such as McKinsey&Co and Cadbury, start-ups and venture capital (MSV and GIF, ~ 1$bn).

She has lead innovation ecosystems nationally and internationally, being an entrepreneur and intrapreneur, Board director and advisor for numerous innovative organisations, and chief scientist for DFAT. She holds a PhD in particle physics from Oxford, is an author on eight international patents, for cancer diagnosis and novel confectionery and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of technology and engineering.

Nick is an experienced and energetic public speaker who has presented to large audiences on his subject matter and business experience all over the world. Nick has a Master’s Degree in business (MBA) from Bond University on the Gold Coast where he was also honored with the Deans Award for his thesis in IT technology.

CyTrack’s UK ‘Life Lesson’ A case study of an SME IT company setting up in the UKNick will present on CyTrack’s business experience when launching in the UK and provide a case study and story line format.The presentation covers the experience and challenges of a small business setting up overseas with seemingly ideal conditions and how things can go wrong quickly. Some of the lessons to be learnt will include the importance of integrating with communities locally, get powerful supporters as soon as possible, watch your back, re-learn your unique selling points, have rock steady belief and be ready to go the distance.

Luke Rust, ex-Head of Marketing and APAC Lead @ Immense Simulations

Immense has democratised transport modelling and simulation to accelerate the deployment of new mobility innovations including autonomous ridesharing and real-time traffic operations. Luke has previously undertaken several UK Government trade missions to build innovation bridges with governments and businesses around the world including Singapore and the USA.

Building Anglo–Australian opportunities: a startup’s perspective

Luke will explore the UK-Australia innovation landscape and strategies for making the leap as an SME. He will talk about his own experience in landing here, benefits of the Global Talent Visa Program, and ways to engage with UK and Australian governments.
