Startup Weekend Gold Coast
20200222

From Idea to Business in 54 hours!

Do you have an idea you’d like to pursue or a problem you’d like to solve but don’t know where to start or who to start with?

Techstars Startup Weekend is the place to look for a team, create a prototype of your idea, validate your business idea, and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs, all in one weekend.

What do you need to bring?

Lots of energy! You’ll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team.

Your idea should be something you have not previously worked on. The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. Over the course of the weekend you’ll be challenged to create a prototype of your MVP, or minimum viable product, that fits the needs of your target customer. You’ll get feedback, iterate, and likely pivot your approach entirely!

Important: You cannot have worked previously on your idea.

Techstars Startup Weekend is a full weekend long experience. Your ticket includes:

      • 7 full (and delicious) meals over the course of the weekend
      • Benefits and discounts from our global partners
      • One-on-one time with amazing mentors
      • A new network of developers, designers, and entrepreneurs eager, like you, to change the world.

Done event Gold Coast
20200128
A day for individuals to come together to get their sh!t done. We provide a facilitated day in a beautiful workspace.

Imagine a day spent 100% focussed on getting your priorities done with zero distractions. With tunes scientifically designed for concentration, and a facilitator to teach you productivity techniques and to hold you accountable.

Why? We spend a lot of time being busy, but not nearly enough of that time is focussed on completing the most important activities that will have the biggest impact. We tend to focus on the most urgent tasks, but leave the most important but less urgent tasks for another day.

Done is a new event series for getting the shit done that matters most. Those important tasks that we just don’t get to. It’s a chance to remove yourself from the distractions of the office or day-to-day duties to work on a key focus. Done runs on the third Monday of every month to keep you in check towards achieving your goals.

How it works:

We provide a beautiful workspace, music for concentration, and a facilitator to hold you accountable.

Each participant brings their own “To Do” list for the day and works through them in a series of sprints. Perhaps for you it’s building a new prototype or website, starting a new marketing campaign, booking yourself in to speak at events or on podcasts, designing new sales collateral, completing a grant application, or hitting a sales target.

As well as work sprints, we will use the power of the group to have short sessions for some brainstorming and co-creation for anyone that would like some fresh perspectives, new ideas, and new connections.

The schedule for the day:

  • 0815 – Arrive
  • 0830 – Welcome & training
  • 0915 – Work Sprint #1 (3x pomodoros)
  • 1045 – Morning tea
  • 1100 – Work Sprint #2 (4x pomodoros)
  • 1300 – Lunch (working lunch)
  • 1330 – Work Sprint #3 (4x pomodoros)
  • 1500 – Afternoon tea
  • 1530 – Work Sprint #4 (3x pomodoros)
  • 1700 – Wrap-up
  • 1730 – Finish

Who should attend:

The event is targeted to anyone who want to get better traction on key activities or projects. We are charging a ticket price to attend (free for Peak Persona Members) because we want participants who are committed to taking massive action and who are at a stage with their business where they need to get sh!t done.

But for others who don’t have their own “To Do” lists you can also attend to work on other participants projects to build up your experience and practice your skills, and to connect with some serious hustlers, movers and shakers.

What we will provide:

  • Venue setup ready for you to work
  • Facilitator to guide you through the day
  • Some stationery and whiteboards for creative design work
  • Snacks for the breaks (BYO lunch)
  • Music and sweets to keep the energy up
  • Internet and power

What to bring:

  • Your laptop, charger and other required devices and work materials
  • A reusable water bottle and coffee keep cup
  • Your lunch (avoid carbs)

How to prepare for the event:

  • Identify one key activity or focus area that you want to get traction on – it could be implementing a new marketing campaign, building a prototype, hitting a sales target, completing a grant application, etc.
  • Create a plan of the core actions needed so that you will use the work sprints to maximum effectiveness.
  • Get good sleep the night before. Arrive in the right mindset to GSD!

Annual Industry Christmas Party
20191207

Gold Coast Innovators and Entrepreneurs – the Annual Industry Christmas Party is happening again – Friday 6th December.

  • Food
  • Drinks
  • Live Music
  • AND ALL OF US !!

The Christmas party has always been a great time for all of us to get together and has been running every year since 2011 when the combination of the Silicon Beach networking group and others decided to bring all of the Gold Coast business and technology groups together to mingle and celebrate the season.

There have been a variety of venues over the years – you might remember the Christmas parties at:

  • 150 Public House, Bundall – 2011
  • QT Hotel, Surfers – 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017
  • BINE, Burleigh – 2014
  • Burleigh Brewing – 2016
  • Gold Coast Innovation Hub – 2018

We have also had some great sponsors including ongoing major sponsor (and organiser) Opmantek together with Mitchell Lake, Carton Cloud, Prime Financial, OnTheNet, IT Forum Gold Coast, Literacy Planet, Anonyome Labs, ETZ Technologies to name a few.

This year’s event will be hosted at the Gold Coast Innovation Hub event centre and generously sponsored by Opmantek again together with investment group 42 Ventures. We don’t intend for this event to be at The Hub each year but for this year we appreciate their sposnorship/support and the donation of the event centre. We are looking for additional sponsors, so if you are a local business that wants to contribute to making the night one to remember please select a sponsorship ticket.

We would love to have representation from as many different groups and organisations on the Gold Coast as possible and sponsors will have a small amount of time on the mic on the night to talk about what they do and share a Christmas greeting with everyone.

Obviously the $10 ticket is a nominal fee – all drinks and food and entertainement are included and primarily funded by sponsors.

Merry Christmas!

WHAT IS SELF AWARENESS? Why is it an important element of success?
20191023

Presented By Dr Amanda McCullough. Join us for this special event on What is self-awareness? and Why is it an important element of success?

By the end of the session, you will have a practical, step-by-step process for how to think about behaviour in a way that makes sense to you. You don’t need to be a psychologist. This session is for anyone interested in
changing behaviour (their own or others), influencing change or learning just a little bit more about why we do what we do. You don’t need to be extroverted, or a high level academic to use these processes to bring about
change.

In this session, we will cover three key elements:

  1. Knowing yourself first;
  2. Getting from vision to action;
  3. Using practical behaviour change strategies.

Dr Amanda McCullough was the 2017 Bupa Health Foundation Emerging Researcher of the Year. She has an unwavering curiosity about why we do what we do and how to change it. She works with clients in the healthcare and higher education sectors to support them to solve complex cultural issues. She brings together 10 years of experience in behaviour change research across Australia and the UK, with her qualifications in coaching and Higher Education teaching to support others to reach their potential.

How does it work?

For first time contestants, please review Trace Labs CTF rules here.

All leads generated on the missing person cases will be handed to the National Missing Persons Coordination Centre.

Grant Ready Masterclass
20191010
Grant writing does not have to be confusing or overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be something that only the professionals do.

With the announcement of the next round of Ignite Ideas now open, we thought it was an ideal time to give Gold Coasters (or anyone that wants to come and see us on the Gold Coast) some hints and tips on how to increase your chances of success when applying for grants. This Friday from 9am, join us for a 1 hour workshop with Gold Coast Innovation Hub CEO, Sharon Hunneybell, where we will talk about the grant, addressing merit criteria and setting achievable milestones.

After the workshop you are welcome to stay on and work for the day, as part of our regular monthly ‘member for a day’ initiative.
